More specifically, its fast pace, non-stop action and the expressions and emotions of the characters is what defines Redline. The film’s purpose was to simply focus on pushing the boundaries of exaggeration through its theme of speed and acceleration.
It used the traditional animation method because you cannot achieve the same level of exaggeration if done in different forms of film, such as live action. The film took 7 years to animate with 100,000 hand drawn cels and no CGI. Koike wrote the storyboard and was the unit and animation director. Takeshi Koike of Studio Madhouse’s 2009 animated film Redline is a prime example of well accomplished exaggeration through basing every motion on physics which grounds the film to reality. Exaggeration is a principle of animation that is crucial in creating lively movement and expressions that need to be well timed and executed to create maximum impact on viewers.
